Men's Nordic Ski Team Spends Week In Anchorage

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Northern Michigan University men’s Nordic ski team spent the week of Jan. 5-11 in Anchorage, Alaska competing. First up was the U.S. Cross Country Championships which was followed by the University of Alaska Anchorage Invitational.
Phillip Violett led the ‘Cats in the 10K freestyle events at the U.S. Cross Country Championships (Jan. 5) with a 75th place showing in a time of 28:21.6. Justin Singleton was the next ‘Cat to cross the finishing line with a time of 28:37.7 which was good for 88th place. A little less than 13 seconds back was teammate Tim Cook in 91st place (28:50.3). The final ‘Cat was Kevin Cutts in 136th (30:13.7).
The classic race was not held because of the cold temperature. Instead the team competed in the classical sprint race on Thursday (Jan. 8). Cutts was 34th (3:50.95) as he led the NMU team with a 34th-place showing. Singleton was 42nd (3:53.70).
In the College Cup competition which was part of the U.S. Cross Country Ski Championships the NMU men finished in 13th place with 64 points. Over all (men and women combined) NMU was 11th with 175 points. The College Cup was designed to include results from both the freestyle and classic events at U.S. Nationals. However, because the classic race was canceled due to cold weather, only the freestyle race factored into the standings.
Over the weekend (Jan. 10-11) the ‘Cats skated at the UAA Invitational. The first day of the event was the 15K classic while the 15K freestyle was the second day’s event.
Violett had a top 25 finish in the classic race with 20th place showing with a time of 44:03.3. Cutts also factored in the top 25 as he was 23rd (44:10.8). Singleton with a time of 44:48.3 was 38th. Cook covered the course in a time of 47:59.5 to place 76th
