Wildcats Come Up Short Against The Huskies
MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team down by three points at the half (26-23) to the Michigan Tech Huskies used a strong come back in the second half, but fell short Saturday afternoon. NMU dropped a 69-60 decision to MTU.
The Wildcats with the loss drop to 6-5 overall and 1-5 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). MTU improves to 9-2 and 6-0 respectively.
The Huskies jumped out to a 9-2 lead about five minutes into the game. NMU cut the lead to 9-6 on back-to-back baskets by Angie Leckson and Christa Erickson. With MTU leading by five points Holly Cole hit a three-pointer at 11:29 for a two-point deficit (11-9). NMU’s next basket was a three-pointer by Cassi Rushford at 9:20 to give NMU the 12-11 lead. MTU took the lead before Kellie Rietveld canned a three-pointer of her own to tie the game at 15-all (7:13). MTU used a 4-2 run to take a 19-17 lead before Angie Leckson tied the game at 19-all with 4:47 left in the half. Leckson gave NMU the lead by converting the free throw (20-19) for a three-point play. Rushford hit another three at 2:42 for a four-point NMU lead (23-19). MTU closed out the half by scoring seven straight points.
A little over a minute into the second half Kelsey Deacon hit from the arc to cut the MTU lead to two points (28-26). With MTU leading by five points (16:20) Leckson went in for a lay-up for a 33-30 score. The Huskies used a 14-5 run to extend its lead to 12 points with less than 10 minutes left in the game (47-35). With 5:22 left in the game MTU enjoyed a 17-point cushion (60-43). NMU trailing by 12 points (61-49) with a almost four minutes showing on the clock received five points from Rietveld over a span of a minute for a 61-54 score. The ‘Cats received three-pointers from Deacon and Christa Erickson in the final two minutes of the game, but it was not enough.
Three players ended the game with 13 points each. Rietveld was the lone starter in double-digits as she had 13 points and six assists. Off the bench Erickson and Rushford each had 13 points. Erickson also led the ‘Cats on the boards with five rebounds. Danae Danen led the Huskies with 16 points. Katie Wysocky had a double-double of 13 points and 14 rebounds for MTU.
NMU from the floor was 20-50 (40 percent). That included 11-24 from three-point land. Six of NMU’s three-pointers came from Erickson (3-4) and Rushford (3-5) with three each. From the charity stripe the ‘Cats were 9-10 (90 percent). MTU outrebounded NMU 35-22. NMU recorded six offensive rebounds.
The ‘Cats have two games at home next week. NMU will face Tiffin on Thursday (Jan. 8) and Ashland on Saturday (Jan. 10).
