HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team down by six points at the half (39-33) came back to defeat the Michigan Tech Huskies Saturday night. NMU shot 52 percent in the second half (13-25) and held the Huskies to 37 percent from the floor (10-27). At the final buzzer the Wildcats had escaped with a 69-67 win.
NMU improves to 6-1 overall on the season and 2-1 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). MTU falls to 4-4 and 1-2 respectively.
When Marc Renelique sank all three of his free throws at 12:20 of the first half the ‘Cats had taken the 16-14 lead. Renelique would add a jumper and a three-pointer in the next minute to give the ‘Cats a 21-16 lead. At 9:36 MTU had tied the score for the fourth time at 21-all, Tyler Kazmierkoski added a three-pointer of his own at 8:42 for a three-point lead (24-21). Raymount McElroy gave the ‘Cats a four-point cushion at 7:37 after a lay-up. MTU cut into the NMU lead and took over the lead with six minutes to go in the half (27-26). MTU would use a 12-7 run to end the half and take the lead into the locker room.
The Huskies built a 15-point lead (48-33) about four minutes into the second half before the ‘Cats chipped away at it. Back-to-back baskets by Renelique had the MTU lead under 10 points (48-40) with almost 14 minutes left in the game. MTU still kept NMU at a distance, but three baskets in a row by Warner (two lay-ups) and a three-pointer by Kazmierkoski had the lead down to one (56-55) with 8:11 showing on the clock. Warner tied the game at 58-all with a three-pointer at 6:12. NMU then used an 8-2 run over the next three minutes to keep the lead (66-60). Four of NMU’s points came from the free throw line during the run. MTU had cut the NMU lead to two points (66-64) with under two minutes left in the game, but Renelique hit a big three-pointer with 1:18 left in the game for the 69-64 lead. MTU did try to make it close at the end, but the ‘Cats held them off to pick up the win.
Renelique led all scorers with 24 points. He was 7-16 from the floor for the game which included 5-8 from the arc. Warner added 15 while Kazmierkoski had 10 points. Fedrick Bowe led MTU with 18 points. Warner and Kyle Greene each had seven rebounds to lead the ‘Cats. Warner also had three steals.
NMU shot 46.8 percent from the floor for the game (22-47). The NMU defense held MTU to 38.6 percent shooting for the game (22-57). NMU made half of its shots from the three-point line (9-18). The ‘Cats took 23 trips to the free throw line, converted 16 times (69.6 percent). MTU did win the battle off the glass with an 11-rebound edge (42-31).
NMU will not have much time to rest as they are back in action on Monday night (Dec. 15) against Northland College at the Berry Events Center.
