MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team finally won a game on a Saturday night, sort of. NMU hosted the United States National Team Development Program (USNTDP) U-18 team in an exhibition game at the Berry Events Center. The Wildcats won the game by a score of 6-2.
Mark Olver led the way for the ‘Cats with four points on two goals and two assists. Phil Fox gave the ‘Cats the 1-0 lead with a goal at 1:19 of the first period. Olver assisted on the goal. Erik Gustafsson made the score 2-0 with a marker at 5:37 of the period. Olver also assisted on that goal along with Andrew Fernandez. The USNTDP cut the lead in half (2-1) when Chris McCarthy turned the lamp on at 15:05.
The second period saw the ‘Cats add two more goals to the scoreboard. Olver scored his first goal of the night and third point at 7:41. Jared Brown added the second goal of the period at 19:32. Both goals in the period were unassisted.
Kenny Ryan of the USNTDP team scored a short-handed goal at 00:57 of the third period for the 4-2 score. NMU added an extra-attacker goal by Olver at 2:47 (5-1). Nick Sirota and Gregor Hanson assisted. Ray Kaunisto scored the final goal of the night at 9:12 on the power play. Derek May and Brown assisted.
Shot were almost even as NMU had one more at 23-22. NMU was 1-5 on the power play while the USNTDP was 0-3. Devan Hartigan went the distance for the ‘Cats between the pipes as he had 20 saves.
NMU will play Michigan Tech next week in a home-and-home series for its final action before Christmas. Friday night (Dec. 19) the two will square off in Houghton at 7:07 p.m. The action shifts to Marquette on Saturday (Dec. 20) as the ‘Cats and Huskies will face off at the Berry Events Center at 7:35 p.m.
