Green Knights Give Wildcats A Test

 

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team faced St. Norbert College Monday at the Berry Events Center for its final tune-up before Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play. Down by one at halftime (40-39) the Wildcats came back to pull away and take the game by a score of 81-69. NMU stays perfect on the season at 4-0 while the Green Knights are now 2-2.
The first 20 minutes of play was almost all St. Norbert. About four minutes into the game the Green Knights held a five-point lead (12-7) before the ‘Cats scored four points on two free throws from Kelsey Deacon and a jumper from Jaclyn Davey. With the score tied at 17-all the Green Knights went on a 22-10 run to take a 39-27 lead with a little over two minutes left in the half. NMU had the lead to less than 10 points with 1:28 left before the half on two free throws from Kellie Rietveld (40-32). Rietveld then sank two more free throws with a little over a minute left before half (40-34). NMU scored the final five points before the intermission on a three-pointer by Christa Erickson and a lay-up by Rietveld at the buzzer. 
The first three plus minutes of the second half both teams traded baskets. NMU took over the lead for good at 15:50 on an Erickson three-pointer at 15:50 (48-46). About six minutes later the ‘Cats enjoyed a seven-point lead (61-54) on a lay-up by Rietveld. St. Norbert had the ‘Cats lead down to two points (64-62) with a little over six minutes left in the game. NMU answered with nine straight points (73-62). Deacon connected on four free throws down the stretch for the win.
Five ‘Cats ended the game in double-digits in the scoring column. Leading the way was Deacon with 18 points; she was followed by Cassie Hegbloom off the bench with 15, Rietveld with 14, Angie Leckson with 11 and Erickson with 10. Steffani Stoeger had a game-high six rebounds.   Krista Pelky led the Green Knights with 15 points.
NMU was 26-56 from the floor (46.4 percent). That included 6-25 from the arc (24 percent). From the free throw line the ‘Cats were almost perfect at 23-24 (95.8 percent). The Green Knights did out-rebound the ‘Cats 31-27.
NMU faces Northwood on Thursday night (Dec. 4) and Wayne State on Saturday (Dec. 6) in its first two conference games which will be on the road.
