MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s swimming and diving team picked up five wins against Hillsdale Saturday, but it was not enough as the Wildcats suffered a 169-118 setback to the Chargers.
The opening event of the meet saw the 200-yard medley relay swim a 1:59.84 to finish in second place. Members of the relay were Ashley Oliver, Hannah Bolger, Lindsay VandenBroeck and Emily Olson. Sarah Cempel in the 1,650 freestyle swam a 19:33.36 which was good for third. Elyse Sawka (19:39.83) and Lindsey Kuehn (19:55.38) were fourth and fifth respectively.
Catherine Sromek in the 200 freestyle swam a 2:08.25 for a third-place showing. Stephanie Rogaczewski in the same event swam a 2:11.49 for fifth. Oliver led the ‘Cats in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:03.59 for third. VandenBroeck with a time of 1:11.51 was fourth. Bolger (1:15.58) in the 100 breaststroke was second as she was followed by teammates Kuehn (1:20.60) and Brenda Zickus (1:20.79) respectively.
Olson was the lone ‘Cat scoring points in the 200 butterfly as she was fourth with a clocking of 2:22.84. Zickus was the only NMU swimmer to score points in the 50 freestyle as she was fifth with a time of 27.97. Kara Vander Baan captured the 3-meter board with a score of 252.75 points with sister, Kelli, second with 243.20. Zickus swam a 59.74 in the 100 freestyle for a fifth-place showing.
Oliver (2:17.75) and Sromek (2:23.08) went second and third respectively in the 200 backstroke. Cempel (5:45.44) and Sawka (5:48.85) were the highest placing ‘Cats in the 500 freestyle as they were third and fourth respectively. Olson then won the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:02.19 while teammates VandenBroeck (1:07.23) and Cempel (1:21.47) were fourth and fifth respectively.
On the 1-meter board Kelli Vander Baan won the event with 238.50 points while, Kara, was third with 225.85. NMU took the top four spots in the 200 I.M. as Sromek won the race with a time of 2:25.83, next was Bolger (2:29.07), VandenBroeck (2:31.77) and Rogaczewski (2:32.87).
The final event of the meet, the 200 freestyle relay saw the ‘Cats enter two relays and swim to a one-two finish. The “A” relay of ZIckus, Sromek, Sawka and Oliver swam a 1:51.82. While the “B” relay of Kuhen, Rogaczewski, Cempel and Nicole Kaszuba swam a 1:56.02.
