MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball game against Marygrove Saturday morning was never in doubt. NMU held a 55-14 lead at the half and cruised to a 97-40 win over the Mustangs. The Wildcats improve to 2-0 on the season while Marygrove falls to 1-5.
NMU began the game with a 14-4 run. The ‘Cats built the lead to 20 points with 10:29 left in the half on a jumper by Carla L’Esperance. For the first half the ‘Cats received 33 points off its bench.
Every player who stepped onto the court Saturday scored for the ‘Cats. Steffani Stoeger led NMU with 14 points. Three players had 10 points for the game as they were Kellie Rietveld, Brynn Larsen and Erin Powers. Larsen just missed a double-double as she ended the day with a team-high nine rebounds.
NMU was 34-70 from the floor for the game for 48.6 percent. From the arc the ‘Cats were 9-19 for 47.4 percent. Natalie Larocque was 2-3 while Stoeger was 2-2 from the three-point line. NMU missed three of its free throws as the team was 20-23 for 87 percent. The ‘Cats had 51 rebounds to 34 for Marygrove.
NMU will be back in action at the Berry Events Center Monday evening (Nov. 24) as the Lions of Finlandia visits at 5:30 p.m.
