MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University volleyball team will be making its first appearance in the NCAA II regional tournament since 2004. That year the Wildcats won the region to advance to the NCAA II Elite Eight. This year NMU faces the University of Indianapolis at 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 21 at Grand Valley State in the third match of the first round at the NCAA II Midwest Region Tournament. NMU, the fifth seed, enters the tournament with an overall record of 20-11 while UIndy is 27-9 and the fourth seed.
Lewis (28-7) will face Northern Kentucky (25-7) in the first match of the day at noon. The second match has Saginaw Valley State (23-6) and Michigan Tech (19-10) at 2:30 p.m. Grand Valley State (28-3), the host of the regional tournament, plays Northwood (16-13) in the final match of the day at 7:30 p.m.
The second round would be on Saturday, Nov. 22 with matches at 5 and 7:30 p.m. The regional championship would be on Sunday, Nov. 23 at 7 p.m.
NMU and UIndy have met twice this season. The first meeting was at the Flyer Festival at Lewis in early September. UIndy won in five sets (25-19, 23-25, 19-25, 25-16, 6-15). About a month ago the ‘Cats and Greyhounds met at the GLVC-GLIAC Crossover Tournament. NMU won that match in three straight (25-23, 25-23, 25-22).
The winner of the tournament will advance to the NCAA II Elite Eight which will be held Dec. 4-6.
