Strong Second Half Keeps 'Cats Perfect
MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team ran its record to a perfect 2-0 on the season with a 79-74 win over the visiting Bulldogs of the University of Minnesota-Duluth (2-2) Sunday afternoon at the Berry Events Center. NMU was down by six points at the half (40-34), but used a strong second half shooting to take the game. NMU shot 50 percent from the floor for the second 20 minutes of play.
The first half saw the Bulldogs take a 13-point lead (32-19) with a little over five minutes left in the half. Kyle Greene cut the lead by three with a three-point play (32-22). NMU did cut the Bulldogs lead to eight points with 3:16 left in the half on a tip-in by Greene (34-26). Raymont McElroy hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to end the half to have the Wildcats down by a half dozen.
For the first 12 plus minutes of the second half UMD held the lead. Marc Renelique nailed a three-pointer at 8:56 to tie the game at 57-all. About 30 seconds later he hit another three-pointer to give the ‘Cats the lead (60-59). UMD took over the lead for the next four minutes. NMU tied the game at 68-all at 4:18 on a three-pointer by McElroy. The Bulldogs tied the game at 70 on a jumper by Steve Duncan at 3:27. Eric Sirrine canned a three-pointer from the top of the circle to give the ‘Cats the lead 73-70 with a little over three minutes left in the game.
The Bulldogs converted a lay-up by Brian Sykora with 1:43 left on the clock for a 74-73 lead. NMU scored the final six points of the game on a jumper and two free throws by Renelique and a jumper by Chris Warner for the final margin.
All five starters for NMU were in double-figures in the scoring column. Renelique led all scorers with 25 points. Tyler Kazmierkoski added 17 points. McElroy had 12 while Warner and Greene added 11 points each. John Vaudreuil and Sykora led UMD with 20 points each. Greene led the ‘Cats on the boards with eight rebounds.
NMU was 26-59 from the floor for the game for 44.1 percent. From the three-point line the ‘Cats were 14-29 for 48.3 percent. Renelique was 6-13 from three-point land. NMU shot 72.2 percent from the free throw line on 13-18.
The ‘Cats have two more home games coming up. First up is a clash with Alma on Nov. 22 at 1 p.m. Two days later (Nov. 24) the ‘Cats face Finlandia at 7:30 p.m.
