INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Saturday the Northern Michigan University football team concluded the 2008 season at the University of Indianapolis. UIndy held a 14-6 lead after 30 minutes of play and added 10 more points in the second half for a 24-6 win. NMU ends the season at 2-8 overall and in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The Greyhounds end the 2008 campaign with an overall record of 5-6 and a 4-6 mark in the conference.
UIndy struck first with an 18-yard run from Craig Jenkins at 8:35 of the first quarter. At 13:34 of the second quarter Dan Elmore caught a six-yard pass from Carter Kopach to get the ‘Cats on the board. The score capped a 13 play 74-yard drive. Matt Blanchard’s two-point pass attempt was intercepted and the home team held a 7-6 lead.
About five minutes later (8:30) Deontrai Campbell scored a five-yard touchdown for the 14-6 lead at the half. The third quarter saw the Greyhounds add a score from Jace Morrison when he connected from 22 yards out for a field goal at 3:05. UIndy now had a 17-6 lead. Jenkins scored his second touchdown of the day at 9:36 of the fourth quarter from a yard out for the final score of the game.
NMU had 247 yards of total offense on the day (136 rushing and 111 passing). UIndy had 389 yards of total offense (274 rushing and 115 passing). Brennan VanEffen had a career day with 133 yards on 29 carries for the ‘Cats. Kopach ended the game with all the passing yards on 14-29-2. Elmore had a game-high six receptions for 70 yards.
Nathan Yelk led the NMU defense with 19 total tackles (six solo and 13 assisted), a sack and a tackle-for-loss. John Blessing tallied 11 total tackles (two solo and nine assisted), a half of sack and two tackles-for-loss. Cody Wheeler had the lone interception on the day.
