MARQUETTE, Mich. - Northern Michigan University is looking to secure a first-round home match for the upcoming Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Volleyball Tournament and are one step closer as they pulled off a three-set win over the visiting Ferris State University Bulldogs Friday night at Vandament Arena. The Wildcats took the match in three straight sets, even though they had to come from behind in the second set (25-20, 27-25, 25-17). NMU improves to 19-9 overall on the season and 11-4 in GLIAC play. Ferris is now 16-11 and 8-7 respectively on the season.
NMU has now won three matches in a row and four of its past five.
Daniela Bezerra led the ‘Cats with 10 kills tonight. Katt Garvick, Caryn VanBeckum and Mandie Meyer all had eight kills each. As a team the ‘Cats had 42 kills in 105 total attempts for a hitting percentage of .238.
Rachel Green had 27 of the 31 total assists for the ‘Cats. Meyer added 11 digs on the defensive front. Teammates Cassie Osiecki had eight and Green seven digs for the match. NMU had seven service aces for the match with Osiecki leading the way with three.
At the net, VanBeckum had all three block solos and a block assist. Garvick added two block assists.
The ‘Cats will conclude the 2008 regular season tomorrow afternoon (Nov. 8) at 2 p.m. in Vandament Arena against Grand Valley State. Following the game there will be a pizza social with the 2008 Volleyball Team sponsored by Jon and Jenny Webb and Downtown EyeCare.
