KENOSHA, Wis. – The Northern Michigan University women’s swimming and diving team competed at the 2008 Kiefer Fall Classic which was held at Carthage College Saturday (Nov. 1). The Wildcats placed third with 423 points. The host school won the event with 792 points.
The first event of the day the 200-yard medley relay saw the ‘Cats take fifth with a time of 2:01.99. Members of the team were Ashley Oliver, Lindsay VanderBroeck, Elyse Sawka and Emily Olson. Catherine Sromek was the top placing NMU swimmer in the 200 I.M. with a sixth-place showing (2:26.53).
Olson with a time of 26.67 placed eighth in the 50 freestyle. Sarah Cempel placed fourth in the 500 freestyle (5:38.37) while Olson was eighth in the event (5:41.24). In the 200 breaststroke, Lindsay VanderBroeck was ninth (2:55.06). NMU had two top eight finishers in the 200 backstroke as Oliver was fourth (2:18.58) and Sromek seventh (2:23.98).
Olson placed in another freestyle event as she was sixth in the 100 (58.78). Cempel (2:41.65) and Oliver (2:43.37) were sixth and seventh in the 200 butterfly respectively. Sawka with a time of 11:37.51 was fourth in the 1,000 freestyle. Teammates Cempel (11:44.41) and Lindsey Kuehn (11:46.32) were seventh and eighth respectively.
Olson in the 100 butterfly had the highest place for the ‘Cats on the day with a second-place showing (1:02.97). In the 200 freestyle, Sromek was seventh as she swam the eight lengths of the pool in a time of 2:07.49. Stephanie Rogaczewski with a clocking of 1:20.49 was eighth in the 100 breaststroke (1:20.49).
The 100 backstroke saw Oliver place fourth (1:04.61) and Sromek eighth (1:08.01). NMU placed sixth in the final event of the day which was the 400 freestyle relay. Cempel, Rogaczewski, Sromek and Brenda Zickus swam a 4:04.91.
NMU will host UW-Oshkosh on Saturday (Nov. 8) at noon in the PEIF Pool.
