MARQUETTE, Mich. – Notre Dame used three power-play goals, one in each period, to defeat the Northern Michigan University Wildcats 3-2 Friday night at the Berry Events Center. NMU is now 2-4-0 overall on the season and 1-3-1 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). The Fighting Irish improve to 3-3-0 and 1-2-0 respectively. Both of NMU’s goals came from players scoring their first goal of the season.
NMU struck first when Tim Hartung scored at 5:47 of the first period. Gregor Hanson and Blake Cosgrove assisted. About seven minutes later Notre Dame would answer with its first power-play goal of the game at 12:20 by Ryan Thang. Under five minutes in the second period the Fighting Irish made the score 2-1 with its second power-play marker at 4:44 by Dan Kissel.
The third period at 7:29 Notre Dame made the count 3-1 with its third power-play goal of the night by Christian Hanson. Nathan Sigmund scored at 12:32 of the third period for the final count (3-2). Ben Lindemulder and Erik Gustafsson assisted on the goal.
Shots were almost even as the ‘Cats had one more than Notre Dame at 27-26. NMU had six power-play opportunities and were 0-6 while Notre Dame was 3-10. Brian Stewart turned away 23 shots between the pipes.
The two teams will skate again tomorrow night (Nov. 1) at 7:35 p.m.
