MARQUETTE, Mich. –What a difference 24 hours can make. Friday night the pucks were going into the goal for the Northern Michigan University hockey team. Saturday night at the Berry Events Center it was a different story. Minnesota-Duluth scored a goal in each of the first two periods before adding three in the third period for the 5-0 victory over the Wildcats. NMU falls to 1-1-0 on the season while the Bulldogs are 1-0-1. For the second year in a row the Bulldogs blanked the ‘Cats.
MacGregor Sharp scored the first two goals for UMD at 2:17 of the first period and at 12:57 of the second period. The third period saw Drew Akins score at 5:03 and at 13:22. Between Akins’ goals was a goal scored by Jordan Fulton at 8:11.
Shots were almost even as UMD had one more than NMU with 30 to 29. Each team had seven power-play opportunities for the game. UMD was 2-7 while NMU was 0-7. Brian Stewart for the ‘Cats had 25 saves.
NMU will host its first Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) series of the season next weekend when the University of Michigan Wolverines visit the Berry Events Center (Oct. 17-18).
