Hockey Starts With A Bang
MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team (1-0) began the 2008-09 regular season with a bang Friday night at the Berry Events Center. The Wildcats scored 30 seconds into the contest and cruised to a 5-2 win over the visiting Michigan Tech Huskies (0-1) in the first game of the Superior Cup. It was the opening game for both teams.
Andrew Cherniwchan scored his first collegiate goal at 00:30 f the first period to give the ‘Cats the early 1-0 edge. Jared Brown assisted on the goal. NMU would score two other goals in the period as Brown would add a marker at 4:17. Cherniwchan and Nick Sirota assisted on the goal. A little over five minutes later, Cherniwchan knocked home his second of the season at 10:00. Brown picked up the lone assist.
The ‘Cats added two more goals in the middle frame. Matt Butcher scored a power-play goal at 5:56 with a little help from Tim Hartiung and Ben Lindemulder. NMU’s final goal of the night came off the stick of Ray Kaunisto at 12:22. The goal was unassisted.
The Huskies got on the board with a goal in the second period (16:01) by Jordan Baker. MTU added a goal by Alex MacLeod at 18:35 of the third period.
NMU had 11 shots for the game while MTU had 30. The ‘Cats scored on its lone power play of the night while the Huskies were 1-5 with the extra skater. Brian Stewart went the distance for the ‘Cats and had 28 saves.
The second game of the Superior Cup will be Saturday night (Oct. 11) against the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs. The puck will drop at 7:35 p.m.
