Freshmen Show Skill Against Toronto
MARQUETTE, Mich. – It took the Northern Michigan University hockey team some time to get rolling, but when it did the Wildcats exploded for four third-period goals to take the 4-1 exhibition win over the University of Toronto Sunday afternoon at the Berry Events Center.
The Varsity Blues got on the board first with a power-play goal by Robert Kay at 19:13 of the second period. NMU’s first goal was scored by Nick Sirota 33 seconds into the third period. Assisting was Jared Brown. Andrew Cherniwchan scored the first of his two-goal day at 4:24 of the period on the power play. Erik Gustafsson and Sirota assisted. Cherniwchan made the score 3-1 with his second goal of the day at 18:06 on the power play. Sirota and TJ Miller assisted. Another freshman, Ben Lindemulder, scored a power-play marker at 19:59 for the final score. Tyler Gron assisted.
NMU was 3-7 with the extra skater for the game. The ‘Cats had 29 shots to 14 for Toronto for the afternoon. Devan Hartigan had 13 saves between the pipes.
The ‘Cats will host the Superior Cup this coming weekend. NMU will host Michigan Tech on Friday (Oct. 10) and UM-Duluth on Saturday (Oct. 11).
