MARQUETTE, Mich. – Friday night at Vandament Arena the Northern Michigan University women’s volleyball team spotted the Ashland Eagles the first set (23-25) then came back to take the next three and the match (25-18, 25-16, 25-11). The Wildcats improve to 10-7 overall and 5-3 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play. Ashland falls to 8-8 and 4-5 respectively.
The ‘Cats got off to a slow start in the first set as they had 10 kills in 30 total attempts for a hitting percentage of .133. The team picked it up in the next three sets as the ‘Cats had hitting percentages of .259, .667 and .440. For the match the ‘Cats had 51 kills in 103 total attempts for a hitting percentage of .350.
Caryn VanBeckum led the way with 16 kills in 24 total attempts for a hitting percentage of .583. Daniela Bezerra was the other ‘Cat with 10 or more kills on the night as she ended the match with 11.
Madeline Ogden had 37 assists to lead the ‘Cats. Cassie Osiecki led the defensive effort with 21 digs. Mandie Meyer added 10 digs. Osiecki also added six service aces. As a team, NMU had three block solos and 10 block assists. Emma Wolfe had three block assists for team high honors.
Tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 4) the ‘Cats face the Dragons of Tiffin University at 2 p.m. in Vandament Arena.
