HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s volleyball team began the Michigan Tech week with a four-set win over the Huskies in Houghton on Tuesday night. NMU took the first two sets (25-21, 25-17) before dropping the third set (21-25) and then took the match with an 11-point win in the fourth set (25-14). With the win the Wildcats improve to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). MTU falls to 7-4 and 2-1 respectively.
As a team the ‘Cats had a hitting percentage of .175 for the night. NMU had 51 kills in 143 total attempts. Mandie Meyer paced the ‘Cats with 15 kills. Daniela Bezerra had 11 kills while Caryn VanBeckum added 10. Rachel Green passed the ball for 40 assists.
Defensively the ‘Cats were led by Cassie Osiecki with 18 digs and Meyer with 12. Net play belonged to Meyer and Katie Twardzik with two block solos each. Twardzik and VanBeckum added three block assists each. As a team NMU recorded five block solos and eight block assists. The ‘Cats recorded six service aces as Rebecca Feuerherd and Osiecki had two each.
The ‘Cats stay on the road with matches at Ferris State on Friday (Sept. 19) and Grand Valley State on Saturday (Sept. 20).
