MARQUETTE, Mich. – Saturday afternoon the Northern Michigan University volleyball team suffered its first conference loss of the season. The Wildcats lost to Saginaw Valley State in four sets (23-25, 18-25, 25-22, 15-25). Both teams are now 1-1 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play. The Wildcats are now 6-5 overall on the season while the Cardinals improve to 9-1. NMU saw its 13 home match winning streak end with the loss.
Daniela Bezerra led the ‘Cats on the afternoon with 14 kills while teammate Mandie Meyer added 10. For the match NMU had 44 kills in 149 attempts for a hitting percentage of .128. Rachel Green chipped in with 35 assists, a service ace and 12 digs. Cassie Osiecki with her 14 digs and Meyer’s 11 also contributed on the defensive end.
Caryn VanBeckum had all three block solos on the afternoon. Katt Garvick and Emma Wolfe had two block assists each.
The ‘Cats begin a trek this week with five of its next matches on the road. First up is a Tuesday night (Sept. 16) encounter in Houghton against Michigan Tech. After that the ‘Cats are at Ferris State and Grand Valley State (Sept. 19-20) over the weekend. The final two matches of the road swing are at Hillsdale and Finlay (Sept. 26-27).
