MARQUETTE, Mich. – After spending its first nine matches on the road to open up the 2008 campaign the Northern Michigan University volleyball team played its first match at home Friday night against Lake Superior State University. The Wildcats took care of the Lakers in three straight (25-10, 25-16, 25-18). With the win the ‘Cats improve to 6-4 overall and 1-0 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The Lakers fall to 1-4 and 0-1 respectively.
The ‘Cats were in control of the match. Daniela Bezerra and Caryn VanBeckum each had 12 kills to pace the ‘Cats. As a team, NMU had 42 kills for the match in 96 attempts for a hitting percentage of .333. Rachel Green had a match-high 32 assists.
Defensively the ‘Cats were led by Cassie Osiecki with 17 digs and Mandie Meyer who added 11. Emma Wolfe and VanBeckum at the net each had a block solo and two block assists. As a team NMU had five service aces on the night. Bezerra and Rebecca Feuerherd led the way with two aces each.
NMU will not have much time to rest as they face Saginaw Valley State University Saturday afternoon (Sept. 13) at 2 p.m. in Vandament Arena.
