MARQUETTE, Mich. – The first day of action at the Northern Michigan University Wildcat Soccer Invitational is in the books. The first game of the day saw NMU drop its season opener to Bemidji State by a score of 0-1. St. Cloud State defeated Minnesota-Duluth in the second game (2-1).
The Wildcats (0-1) and the Beavers (1-0) played almost an even game until the 88th minute when Ashlee Ellefsen knocked home the game-winner for Bemidji. NMU had the edge on shots for the game at 15-8. The ‘Cats had four corner kicks to three for the Beavers. Kara Music had five saves in front of the net for NMU.
St. Cloud (1-0) received a goal in each half to take the win. Mary Seritch scored in the first half for the Huskies while Kyrst Flynn-Wallace scored the game-winner at 73:19. UMD (0-2) tied the game on a goal by Becky Anderson at 49:17. Shots were even at 10 on both sides.
Tomorrow (Aug. 31) Bemidji and Minnesota-Duluth will get things started at noon. The ‘Cats will face St. Cloud in the second game at 2 p.m.
