HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s cross country team opened up the 2008 campaign in fine fashion as the Wildcats placed three runners in the top 10 at the U.P. Collegiate Cross Country Opener which was held at Michigan Tech. NMU took the team title with 39 points as MTU was second with 55. Wayne State was fourth with 63 points as the Warriors were followed by Lake Superior State (76) and Finlandia (144).
The first ‘Cat to cross the finish line was Rebecca Holmquist, running in her first collegiate race, finished in third place with a time of 20:15.4. Another newcomer, Erin McCulloch was eighth (20:53.1). A third freshman, Nora Kiilunen, was 10th (21:01.5).
Kristen Schulz finished out of the top 10 as she ran a 21:04.6 for 11th place. Maegan Hendershot was 16th for the ‘Cats as she cover the course with a time of 21:25.1. Finishing in 19th and 20th respectively were Anna Berglund (21:43.2) and Nicole Bougher (21:54.7).
Other runners for NMU were: Connie Goudreau (22nd, 22:05.4), Kirsten Hoklas (24th, 22:14.0), Ingrid Fjeldheim (26th, 22:25.5), Kyle Richards (30th, 22:36.2), Jessie Krob (33rd, 22:44.9), Caitlin Cassidy (37th, 23:03.0), Stephanie Bougher (38th, 23:03.5), Amanda DeConno (40th, 23:09.3), Stephanie Enderby (42nd, 23:15.1) and Megan Hoklas (48th, 24:07.6),
NMU will run again next week at a Pre-GLIAC event in Sault Ste. Marie on Friday (Sept. 5).
