Marquette— The United States Olympic Education Center is set to host the 2008 Junior Olympic National Boxing Championships June 17- 20 in the Northern Michigan University Superior Dome. The country’s top male and female boxers ages 15-16 will compete in the event.
This will be the third consecutive year that the competition will be hosted by the USOEC.
“We are pleased to continue our longstanding relationship with USA Boxing,” said USOEC director Jeff Kleinschmidt. “We are humbled by the trust that USA Boxing places in the USOEC and NMU to host this important event.”
The USOEC closed its resident boxing program in December. “We are hopeful that USA Boxing will identify the resources that are necessary to bring the program back in the future,” said Kleinschmidt. “Until then, we are excited to host the Junior Olympic National Championships.”
Three past Junior Olympians will compete at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, including two-time Junior Olympian Luis Yanez, Gary Russell Jr. and Shawn Estrada.
Other former Junior Olympians who achieved success in the amateur and professional ranks include Evander Holyfield, Oscar De La Hoya and David Reid, the USOEC boxer who won gold at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta.
