WESTLAKE, Ohio – Jessica Jones, the marketing and promotions manager for the Northern Michigan University Athletic Department, has been selected by the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) as a top three finalist to receive a 2007-08 NACMA Best of Award. She was selected for the Single-Day Attendance Promotion-Women’s Basketball, “Diamond Date Night” and for Student Promotion, “Mascot Duel”. Jones will be publicly recognized on Tuesday, June 10 during the 17th Annual NACMA Convention in Dallas, Texas.
The “Mascot Duel” was selected from over 1,300 total entries in 18 categories as one of the “Best of the Best”. Jones has been invited to highlight her submission as one of the five panelists on Wednesday, June 11 at the NACMA Convention.
Big Boy Restaurant of Marquette sponsored the “Mascot Duel” as Wildcat Willy and Big Boy were the main attraction in a dance contest. The day (Jan. 26, 2008) began with four chosen contestants participating in a strawberry pie eating contest at halftime of the men’s and women’s basketball games. The winners received free dessert for a year from Big Boy Restaurant. At the hockey game later that day, Wildcat Willy and Big Boy had their dance contest. The winner was based off of crowd applause. Kids in the crowd were cheering for Big Boy while the college students were cheering for Wildcat Willy. Ice cream cones from Big Boy Restaurant were given out. Big Boy Restaurant sponsored both basketball games and the hockey game.
Wattsson and Wattsson Jewelers was the sponsor for “Diamond Date Night” on Feb. 14, 2008. That night they gave away 500 diamonds, four of which were real, at the men’s and women’s basketball games. Wattsson and Wattsson also held a raffle for other jewelery, advertised with the local media and worked with the NMU Athletic Department to promote the event which was held on Valentine’s Day as the weather outside was cold and snowy. Both games were also recognized as NMU Faculty and Staff Night as all faculty and staff received free admission to the games. Wattsson and Wattsson sponsored both games.
Also at the convention NMU will also be receiving the Division II Community Engagement Award for the Fall Sports Kick-Off. Econo Foods, Northern Star Broadcasting, The Mining Journal and the Wildcat Club sponsored the event.
