ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University volleyball team kicked off the spring portion of its schedule with four matches at the University of Michigan Spring Tournament on Saturday (March 29). NMU went 1-3 on the day as they faced teams from the Big Ten, Big East and Mid-American Conferences. Head coach Dominic Yoder’s goal for the matches was to compete with all the teams regardless of the outcomes. The Wildcats were in every match.
NMU began the day with losses to Michigan 1-2 (12-25, 25-20, 11-15) and Purdue 0-2 (23-25, 24-26) of the Big Ten. The ‘Cats picked up a win against Eastern Michigan from the Mid-American Conference in two straight games (25-23, 25-23). The ‘Cats final match of the day was against the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame from the Big East. NMU took the first game before dropping the next two (25-15, 23-25, 10-15).
“We learned throughout the day that we were able to play our offensive and defensive system, and be very successful versus good NCAA I teams,” said Yoder. “Our team was disciplined, scrappy and worked very hard for every point.”
This week NMU travels down state again to participate at the EMU Tournament in Ypsilanti, Mich. on Saturday (April 5). The ‘Cats will face Cleveland State, Northwood, Oakland and Toledo.
