MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at Northern Michigan University announces the Athletes of the Month for February. Matt Siddall from the hockey team was selected as the Male Athlete of the Month. Morgan Smyth from the women’s Nordic ski team was chosen as the Female Athlete of the Month.
Siddall, a senior from North Vancouver, B.C., tallied 13 points in the month on seven goals and six assists. Two of his goals were game-winners. Siddall was named the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Offensive Player of the Week during the month for his play against the University of Nebraska-Omaha (Feb. 22-23). He had six points over the weekend against the Mavericks in the two-game series. Siddall had a goal and three assists in Friday’s 6-4 win. He turned around and had two goals in Saturday’s 4-3 overtime win. Siddall ended the 2007-08 season with 36 points on 18 goals and 18 assists.
Smyth, a senior from Vernon, Vt., was named to the All-Central Collegiate Ski Association (CCSA) first team. She won the pre-regional 12K freestyle race (39:05.9). At the NCAA Central Regional, Smyth was second in both the 5K freestyle (16:03.1) and the 10K classical (32:47.7) races. Smyth ended the season with All-American honors at the NCAA Skiing Championships by placing fifth in the 5K freestyle (18:01.1) race. She was also 16th in the 15K classical race (1:00:44.8) at the NCAA event.
