MARQUETTE, Mich. – Nick Sirota did his best to make the 2007-08 season at least one more game longer. Sirota scored two goals and picked up an assist as the Wildcats avoided elimination with the 4-2 win over Ohio State on Saturday night to even the best-of-three series at a game each. The third and deciding game of the series will be played on Sunday night (March 9) at 7:35 p.m. at the Berry Events Center. “We know we have our hands full here tomorrow,” said Walt Kyle.
NMU improves to 16-18-4 while OSU falls to 12-24-4.
Sirota scored the first goal of the game three minutes into the contest for his 17th of the season. “Ohio State is definitely a team who can hurt us,” said Sirota. “We just had to come out and play our game.” Jared Brown and Alan Dorich assisted on the goal. OSU tied the game at one-all a little over four minutes later at 7:03 on a goal by Jason DeSantis.
NMU scored twice in the second period to take a 3-1 lead. Phil Fox made the score 2-1 with his 11th goal of the season at 1:28. Matt Butcher and Ray Kaunisto picked up the assists. Shots were even at 27 for each side. Brian Stewart for NMU picked up the win with 25 saves. “I thought he (Stewart) was very solid,” said Kyle. Joseph Palmer for the Buckeyes had 23 saves. Stewart stopped a penalty shot by Nick Biondo at 18:05 of the third period. “I was kind of nervous at the start,” said Stewart. “That was my first penalty shot I have ever had in any game.” NMU was 1-6 on the power play while OSU was 0-5.
