BOZEMAN, Montana – The Northern Michigan University Nordic ski teams picked up two All-American honors during the first day of competition at the 2008 NCAA Skiing Championships. The top 10 finishers earn All-American status, with the top five making the first team and the next five on the second team.
In the women’s 5K freestyle race the Wildcats had three skiers in the top 13. Morgan Smyth led the ‘Cats with a fifth-place finish in the race with a time of 18:01.1. Maria Moe Grevsgaard from the University of Colorado won the race (17:09.8). The next NMU skier to cross the finish line was Laura DeWitt in seventh place (18:06.0). Maria Stuber was the final NMU women skier in the race as she was 13th (18:24.5).
In the men’s race which was the 10K freestyle, NMU had three skiers. Martin Stuge Banerud placed 16th (32:15.8) to lead the NMU men. Next was Phillip Violett in 20th (32:30.9) as he was followed by Gus Kaeding 26th (32:57.6).
NMU is currently in second place in the team race with 153 points. Colorado leads with 186 points.
The NMU skiers will be back in action on Friday (March 7). The men will compete in the 20K and the women in the 15K classical races.
