NMU Soccer Signs Three

MARQUETTE, Mich. – Matt Granstrand, the head women’s soccer coach at Northern Michigan University, announces the following student-athletes have signed a National Letter of Intent to attend NMU and play soccer for the Wildcats beginning in the fall.

Signing on the dotted line were Jessica Baker, Brittany Buckingham and Missy Mohr.

“I am very excited about this year’s recruiting class. We were able to be really selective and fill the few areas we felt we needed to strengthen,” said Granstrand. “Our goal was to bring in a goalkeeper, a central mid-defender and a forward who could compete right away. We most definitely achieved our goal. These young ladies are the perfect combination of terrific athletes mixed with top of the line academic performances. With the core of our team returning and the addition of Brittany, Jessica and Missy, I am looking forward to a great 2008 season.”

Baker, is a 5-8 goalkeeper, from Holt, Mich. Played her high school soccer for Holt High School where she was a co-captain of her team. Baker was an all-state honorable mention selection. She was on the Olympic Development Team in 2007 and attended the Super Y National Camp. Baker played club soccer for the West Michigan Fire. She plans on majoring in graphic communications.

“Jessica is a dynamic goalkeeper. She has been trained extremely well and is technically very sound,” said Granstrand. “Adding Jessica gives us two very talented goalkeepers, who will be able to compete and push each other in training.”

Buckingham, is a 5-3 forward, from Big Rapids, Mich. She was a two-time co-captain of her high school team, Big Rapids High School. Buckingham was her high school’s MVP in 2006. She was an all-state honorable mention as well as a first team all-conference selection. Buckingham played club soccer for Northland United. She plans on majoring in mathematics.

“Brittany is a lighting fast forward, who will help add to our attacking capability,” said Granstrand. “I think she will be an exciting player to watch. She is also a cousin of former NMU captain Katie Buckingham.”

Mohr, is a 5-10 defender, from Lansing, Mich. Played her high school soccer at Holt High School where she was voted the Best Defender in 2007. Mohr was selected to the all-conference team in 2007. She was a two-time all-academic team selection for basketball and soccer. Mohr was a four-time captain of her club team, the West Michigan Fire. She plans on majoring in pre-medicine.

“Missy is a talented and strong central player. She could play either a defensive mid or defender positions for us,” said Granstrand. “Missy gives us an added dimension with her height and we look for her to contribute right away.”
