MARQUETTE, Mich. – Six members of the Northern Michigan University men’s and women’s Nordic ski teams will be competing at the 2008 National Collegiate Men’s and Women’s Skiing Championships, to be held March 5-8 at Bridger Bowl and Bohart Ranch in Bozeman, Montana.
Participants are selected on a regional basis from three designated regions for Nordic skiing (Central, East and West Regions). Bids are awarded to regions using a formula determined by the skiing committee. A maximum of 12 student-athletes (three per gender) may participate from an institution.
Nordic events will be held March 5 and 7 at Bohart Ranch. The women’s five-kilometer and men’s 10-kilometer freestyle cross country races will be conducted March 5. The men’s 20-kilometer and women’s 15-kilometer classical races will be held March 7.
Martin Stuge Banerud, Gus Kaeding and Phillip Violett will represent the NMU men. The three women representing NMU are Laura DeWitt, Morgan Smyth and Maria Stuber. Smyth was on the podium twice at last year’s nationals when she was second in the freestyle race and third in the classical.
“We think the team is capable of placing in the top five Nordic teams at the NCAA Championships,” said Sten Fjeldheim, from a CCSA release.
