Wildcats Warm Up For GLIACs At St. Scholastica
DULUTH, Minn. – Saturday (Feb. 16) the Northern Michigan University women’s track and field team competed at the Lake Superior Challenge which was held at St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn.
Danielle St. Onge (7.49) and Brittnee Balbierz (7.64) running in the finals of the 55-meter dash finished in third and seventh place respectively. In the 200 dash Kaylee Laakso with a time of 26.73 was second teammates Balbierz (26.77) was fourth and St. Onge (26.92) seventh. Laakso (1:00.17) came back to place third in the 400.
NMU had three runners place in the top 11 in the 800. Erin VanEnkevort led the way in fifth (2:23.65), Bibiane Mahy (2:24.94) ninth and Maegan Hendershot (2:28.31) 11th. Danielle Stein with a clocking of 5:24.72 took fifth in the mile; she was followed by teammates Jenny Weidmeyer (5:24.77) in sixth and Kristen Schultz (5:27.02) eighth. Kyle Richards ran an 11:10.96 in the 3,000 for eighth place.
In the 5,000 Michele Bisig (1912.51) was second and Brittney Coehoorn (19:18.33) fourth. Natalie Bertucci in the finals of the 55 hurdles won the event with a time of 8.66 and in third was Leslie Luehmann (8.82). The 4x400 relay of Balbierz, VanEnkevort, Mahy and Hendershot ran a 4:16.01 for fifth.
The field events saw Bertucci (5-01.00) place third in the high jump. Paris Malin (9-10.75) was fifth in the pole vault, while teammates Lindsay Balutis and Karin Diebold (9-05.00) tied for ninth.
Luehmann took the long jump with a leap of 17-11.00. St. Onge (16-10.75) was fourth in the event and then took third in the triple jump (33-09.25). Krista Squiers was the top placing ‘Cat in the weight throw with a heave of 45-00.25 which was good for seventh.
The ‘Cats are preparing for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) 2008 Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships next week (Feb. 29-March 1) which will be held at The University of Findlay.
