MARQUETTE, Mich. – For the second time this season the Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team and Northwood University needed a little extra time to settle the game. In January in Midland, Mich. the Timberwolves won in overtime 63-62. Tonight at the Berry Events Center the Timberwolves won again with the extra five minute session, 71-70.
NMU falls to 8-15 overall and 3-12 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). NU improves to 16-7 and 11-4 respectively.
Cassie Hegbloom converted a three-point play at 15:46 of the first half to give the ‘Cats the 11-4 lead. With the score tied at 11-all, Angie Leckson hit a jumper to give NMU the 13-11 lead at 11:13. The Timberwolves went on a 9-1 run to take the 20-14 lead. A three-pointer by Kelsey Deacon and a jumper by LaShawn Lambert cut the NU lead to 20-19 with 5:07 left before the break. NMU was down 22-21 with less than four minutes left before the half. The ‘Cats received a jumper from Erin Powers and two free throws from Allison Carroll to secure a 27-22 lead with 1:29 showing on the clock. NU would score the final two buckets of the half, but the ‘Cats held onto a one-point lead (27-26).
The second half saw Hegbloom tie the game at 31-all with a jumper about three minutes in the half. After trading a couple of baskets the held a four-point cushion at 40-36 after Steffani Stoeger made both of her free throws at 13:12. Less than a minute later, Carroll hit a jumper for a 42-38 lead. NU held a five-point lead at 53-48 with 5:14 left in regulation. Foul shots were made by Leckson and Stoeger to get the ‘Cats within two (53-51). The Timberwolves held another five-point lead (56-51) with 2:39 on the clock. NMU made three of four free throws to cut it to a 56-54 game with 35 ticks left on the clock. NU made two free throws by Sarah Glowacki with 10 seconds left for a three-point lead. NMU then hit a three-pointer by Natalie Larocque with four seconds left in regulation to send it to overtime.
NMU took the early 62-59 lead in overtime with a three-pointer by Larocque. The score would be tied three more times within the next two minutes. Carroll made a jumper at 1:51 to give the ‘Cats the 68-66 lead. With the score tied at 68, the Timberwolves took a two-point lead at 70-68 with less than a minute left. Larocque made a layup with 40 seconds left in overtime to tie the game at 70-all. With 21 seconds showing on the clock, NU made one of its two free throws to take the lead 71-70. Carroll missed a jumper with a second left to end the game.
Carroll led NMU with 18 points and nine rebounds. Deacon and Leckson added 11 each. Larocque off the bench had 10 points. Jodi Ostergren led the Timberwolves with 19 points.
For the game NMU was 22-57 from the floor (38.6 percent). The ‘Cats were 4-18 from the three-point line (22.2 percent). NMU made 30 trips to the free throw line and made 22 throws (73.3 percent). NU had a slight edge off the glass (43-39).
The ‘Cats will face the Cardinals of Saginaw Valley State on Saturday (Feb. 16) at 1 p.m.
