Men take top two spots in pre-regional freestyle race

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University men’s Nordic ski team got one of its two pre-regional races in this past weekend. Saturday (Feb. 9) the team competed in the 18K freestyle which was held at the NTN Trails. Sunday’s (Feb. 10) mass start classic race in Houghton was cancelled. 
 
Martin Stuge Banerud won the freestyle race with a time of 48:57.6. Teammate Phillip Violett was second about four seconds back (50:01.3). Other NMU skiers were: Gus Kaeding, seventh (51:53.4); and Tim Cook, ninth (51:53.9).
 
NMU was on top of the team score tally with 22 points. UW-Green Bay was second with 15 points and Michigan Tech third (8).
 
The team will be at the CCSA Regional Championships in Giants Ridge, Minn. this weekend (Feb. 16-17).
