ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team down by nine at the half (33-24) fell to the Grand Valley State Lakers on Saturday afternoon by a score of 63-50. GVSU led the entire game.
NMU falls to 8-14 overall on the season and 3-11 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The Lakers improve to 14-9 and 9-5 respectively.
GVSU rushed out to a 7-2 lead before the ‘Cats went on an 11-6 run to tie the score at 13-all. Cassie Rushford’s three-pointer tied the game at 10:31. NMU would not score another basket until 7:33 when Allison Carroll canned a three-pointer (23-16). Carroll then made a jumper at 6:44 to get the ‘Cats within seven points (25-18), which was as close as NMU would get in the half.
The second half was all Lakers as they shot 50 percent from the floor (10-20) which include 3-6 from the three-point line. GVSU held a double-digit lead almost the entire half, NMU had the lead down to 11 points with 7:00 left in the game off of a Cassie Hegbloom layup. LaShawn Lambert made a layup with about two minutes left in the game to get the lead to less than 10 points (57-48). Angie Leckson sank two free throws at 1:25 for NMUs final points.
Kelsey Deacon was the lone ‘Cat in double-digits with a game-high 17 points. She made half of the three-pointers by going 3-9 from beyond the arc. Lambert led all rebounders with nine. Crystal Zick led GVSU with 14 points.
The ‘Cats were 20-64 from the floor (31.3 percent). From the three-point line, NMU was 6-26 (23.1 percent). The ‘Cats only made five trips to the free throw line for the game and were 4-5 (80 percent). GVSU had a three rebound edge for the game (38-36).
NMU will face Northwood and Saginaw Valley State at home this week. The Timberwolves will visit the Berry on Thursday (Feb. 14 at 5:30 p.m.) and the Cardinals on Saturday (Feb. 16 at 1 p.m.).
