MARQUETTE, Mich. – Last night Nick Sirota scored all three goals for the Wildcats. Tonight it looked as if Matt Siddall was going to do the same thing. He scored the first two goals of the game as the Northern Michigan University hockey team swept the Michigan State University Spartans on the weekend with the 3-0 win at the Berry Events Center on Saturday night. Brian Stewart also picked up his second career shutout with 32 saves. NMU swept MSU on Oct. 22-23, 2004 for the last sweep before this weekend.
The ‘Cats improve to 12-15-3 overall and 9-11-2 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). MSU falls to 18-8-5 and 14-5-3 respectively.
Siddall gave the ‘Cats the 1-0 lead with his seventh goal of the season at 18:00 of the first period. Gregor Hanson and Erik Gustafsson assisted. At 17:49 of the second period, Siddall made the score 2-0 with his eighth goal of the season. Tim Hartung and Billy Smith assisted.
Mark Olver scored the ‘Cats third goal of the game at 12:59 of the third period for his 10th of the season. Jared Brown assisted.
Jeff Lerg went the distance for the Spartans as he had 26 saves. Neither team scored on the power play as NMU was 0-3 nor MSU was 0-5. The Spartans had a slight edge on shots at 32-29.
The ‘Cats hit the road next week as they have two games at Ohio State (Feb. 15-16).
