MARQUETTE— United States Olympic Education Center weightlifting team member Chelsea Kyle (Sandusky, Ohio) will compete at the National Junior Championships in Chattanooga, Tenn, Feb. 8-10.
Kyle, a Northern Michigan University freshman, will be competing against 11 others in the 58-kg weight class. This is Kyle’s third time competing at the National Junior Championships. Last year she finished second.
“I hope to be just as successful this year,” said Kyle. “I’m training hard, eating right and staying focused. For me, Junior Nationals is my biggest competition of the year, so I’m making sure I’m extra focused.”
Kyle will be coached at the meet by her hometown coaches, her father and older brother.
“They have been coaching me since I began lifting weights six years ago,” she said. “Their coaching style does vary some from Andy’s [Tysz, the USOEC head weightlifting coach] but their overall goal is the same; make lifts! The most important thing to me is just going out there and lifting my best.”
The competition is the primary qualifying event for the 2008 Junior World Championships held Feb. 29-March 2 in Columbus, Ohio.
