Hockey Has Important Series This Weekend

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team (10-15-3, 7-11-2 CCHA) is hosting a very important Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) series against the defending NCAA I National Champions the Michigan State University Spartans this weekend (Feb. 8-9) at the Berry Events Center with the puck being dropped both nights at 7:35 p.m. It will also be a homecoming for former NMU and current MSU head coach Rick Comley.   NMU is battling for a home-ice spot for the CCHA playoffs.

Other activities surrounding the hockey series are on tap. There will be a Blue Line Club Luncheon on Friday (Feb. 8) in the University Center beginning at 11:45 a.m. The event is open to the public and the cost is $7.75. Walt Kyle and Comley are scheduled to speak along with selected Wildcats. 
 
Later on Friday there will be a Blue Line/Wildcat Club Reception before the game in the Wildcat Room. The reception will last until the second intermission. For Saturday’s hockey clash against the Spartans a set a trading cards will be given out with autographs after the game. After the game on Saturday there will be a fourth period reception at the Landmark Inn.
 
Men’s basketball (6-15, 5-7 GLIAC) after taking a pit stop to face Northland Baptist on Monday night is back on the road for Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) action along with the women’s team (8-12, 3-9 GLIAC). Thursday’s stop (Feb. 7) will be at Ferris State. The women will take the court first at 6 p.m. and will be followed by the men at 8 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 9) both squads will move down the road to face Grand Valley State at 1 and 3 p.m. respectively. 
 
Also on Saturday (Feb. 9) the NMU women’s track and field team will host the Northern Challenge in the Superior Dome beginning at 11 a.m.

The NMU men’s and women’s Nordic ski teams will host part of the pre-regional competition. Saturday (Feb. 9) the ‘Cats host the freestyle part of the competition at the Nokamenon/Forestville Trail beginning at 11 a.m. Sunday (Feb. 10) the event moves to Houghton for the classic race at 12 p.m.
