Snow Can Not Keep The 'Cats From Running, Throwing And Jumping
SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s indoor track and field team was scheduled to compete at the NCAA II Challenge at Saginaw Valley State University, but that competition was cancelled because of the weather. A couple of the schools who were supposed to compete at SVSU decided to have a meet at Lake Superior State University on Saturday.
Krista Squiers with a throw of 14.18-meters placed second in the weight throw. In the high jump, Leslie Luehmann and Natalie Bertucci tied for second in the high jump as both cleared 1.53. Callie Boik with athrow of 10.36 was sixth in the shot put.
NMU had the top three finishers in the mile. Danielle Stein broke the tape first with a time of 5:23.84, second was Jennifer Wiedmeyer (5:27.26) and third Kristin Schultz (5:27.55). Brittney Coehoorn placed fifth in the mile (5:30.19).
The Wildcats had two runners in the finals of the 55-dash. Danielle St. Onge was second (7.53) and Brittnee Balbierz fourth (7.67). In the 400 the ‘Cats went one-two and had four of the top six runners. Stephanie Boyer was first (59.25) as she was followed by Kaylee Laakso (59.95). Fourth in the event was Jessica Trotochaud (1:00.94) and sixth was Laren Rose (1:03.28).
Bertucci captured the 55 hurdles with a time of 8.72, teammate Luehmann was fifth (10.62). Bertucci's time set a new NMU record. She has now broken the record three times in the past three meets.
NMU had four runners in the 800. Maegan Hendershot led the charge with a second-place finish (2:23.65). Third was Erin VanEnkevort (2:24.38), fourth Bibiane Mahy (2:25.40) and fifth Nicole Bougher (2:30.50).
The ‘Cats went one-two in the 200 with Boyer taking the title (26.42) and Balbierz second (27.07). Bertucci placed fifth in the 200 (27.33) with Luehmann sixth (27.39) and Rose eighth (28.24).
In the 3K the ‘Cats had Michelle Bisig third (10:56.72), Kyle Richards sixth (11:22.79), Jessica Krob ninth (11:40.65) and Kristen Holkas 10th (11:55.32).
The 4x400 relay of Trotochaud, VanEnkevort, St. Onge and Boyer won the event with a time of 4:08.67.
NMU will host the Northern Challenge on Saturday (Feb. 9) beginning at 11 a.m.
