ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team skated out of Yost Ice Arena with two points on the weekend. NMU for the second night in a row tied the University of Michigan Wolverines. Tonight’s score (3-3 OT) was the same score as last night. Tonight the ‘Cats came back from a two-goal deficit to take the point.
NMU is currently 10-15-3 overall on the season and 7-11-2 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). UM is now 22-3-3 and 15-2-3 respectively.
UM’s Carl Hagelin scored the opening goal of the game at 3:51 of the first period to give the Wolverines the early 1-0 lead. A little less than five minutes later (8:36) Ray Kaunisto scored his sixth goal of the season to tie the game. Matt Siddall and Matt Butcher assisted on the goal.
Still in the first period, UM made the score 2-1 on a power-play goal by Louie Caporusso at 18:38. Chad Kolarik added a marker at 10:18 of the middle frame for the 3-1 lead for the home team. Matt Butcher at 10:55 made the count, 3-2, with his unassisted goal. For Butcher it was his sixth of the season. Nick Sirota scored his team-leading 13th goal of the season at 7:01 of the third period to tie the game at three-all. Erik Gustafsson and Alan Dorich assisted. For Sirota who leads the team in points (25) it was his first goal since Dec. 1, 2007 at Alaska. Sirota and Butcher are now tied for the team lead in assists with 12 each.
NMU was on the short end of the shot count (37-21) for the game. A total of 15 power plays were skated. NMU was 0-7 while UM was 1-8. Brian Stewart again played well for the ‘Cats as he had 34 saves on the night. He had 13 in the third period alone. Bryan Hogan for UM had 18 saves.
The ‘Cats are at home next weekend for a CCHA series against Michigan State. The puck will drop both nights (Feb. 8-9) at 7:35 p.m.
