CABLE, Wis. – The Northern Michigan University women’s Nordic ski team competed at the Telemark SuperTour race. Saturday (Jan. 26) saw the Wildcats race in the 5K freestyle event. Sunday (Jan. 27) it was 10K mass start classic race.
In the freestyle race the Wildcats had the top three places. Maria Stuber won the event with a clocking of 15:44.8, second was Morgan Smyth (15:51.9) and third Laura DeWitt (15:55.7). Tanya Cook (17:06.8) just missed a top 10 finish as she was 11th . Three places back was another ‘Cat, Anna Bergland (17:08.5) in 14th. Maria Grossi (18:10.2) finished in 24th.
NMU easily won the team race with 96 points. Alaska was second (84) and then Gustavus Adolphus (76).
Smyth covered the classic course in a time of 30:12.0 which was good enough to take the event. Teammates DeWitt (31:35.8) and Stuber (32:15.3) were third and fourth respectively. NMU skiers, Cook (33:47.5) and Bergland (33:50.6) were 14th and 15th respectively. Grossi (37:20.6) was the final NMU skier to cross the finish line in 42nd.
NMU once again skied away with team honors with 94 points. The Nanooks were second (85) and third was Gustavus Adolphus (81).
NMU’s next action will be at the pre-regional race on Feb. 9.
