MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team riding a three-game winning streak entering Saturday’s game against The University of Findlay saw its streak snapped. The Oilers ranked 11th in this week’s NABC NCAA II Poll, held a seven-point halftime lead (34-27)and out-scored the Wildcats in the second half (37-18) to take the game 71-45.
NMU drops to 5-14 overall and 5-6 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). The Oilers improve to 16-3 and 6-3 respectively.
The Oilers were up 5-0 before Jake Suardini made a layup almost four minutes into the game (5-2). Over the course of the next four minutes UF went on a 10-0 run to take a 15-2 lead eight minutes into the game. Tyler Kazmierkoski made three straight free throws to make the score 15-5. With the Oilers holding a 10-point lead (25-15,) NMU received a three-pointer from Kazmierkoski and a jumper from Suardini to get to within five points (25-20) with 4:10 left in the half. Darren Jones had NMU to within four points at 28-24 on a dunk at 3:22. At 2:25 Kazmierkoski rained down a three-pointer to cut the UF lead to three points (30-27). UF scored the final four points of the half.
UF held a double-digit lead for almost the entire second half. NMU did not score its first basket of the half until almost four minutes in by Suardini on a three-pointer. The closest the ‘Cats would get in the half was 11 points at 15:21 on a tip-in by Kazmierkoski (43-32). NMU only shot 35 percent for the second 20 minutes of play on 7-20. UF shot 50 percent from the floor in the second half (14-28).
Kazmierkoski led the ‘Cats with 19 points. Suardini chipped in with 11 points and six assists. Kyle Greene had six rebounds to lead the team. Morgan Lewis led UF with 19 points.
For the game NMU was 17-43 from the floor (39.5 percent). From the arc, the ‘Cats were 7-18 (38.9 percent) as Kazmierkoski made four of the three-pointers. NMU only made nine trips to the free throw line and sank four of the throws (44.4 percent).
The ‘Cats are back in action on Wednesday (Jan. 30) at Lake Superior State.
