MARQUETTE, Mich. – Saturday night the Northern Michigan University hockey team played its second exhibition game of the season at the Berry Events Center. The opponent was the USNTDP U-18 squad. NMU had played the unit four times over the years and enjoyed a 3-0-1 record. The USNTDP defeated the Wildcats for the first time 5-2.
The USNTDP open up the scoring with an unassisted goal by David Wohlberg at 1:06 of the first period. In the second period the USNTDP scored two unanswered goals. David Warsofsky scored the second unassisted goal of the night 37 seconds into the period for the 2-0 lead. Patrick Gaul made the score 3-0 in favor of the USNTDP with a goal at 4:42 of the frame.
The USNTDP went up 4-0 on a power-play goal by Jeremy Morin 28 seconds into the third period. Erik Spady made the count 4-1 with a goal at 8:36. Tim Hartung and Jared Brown assisted. Gaul scored his second goal of the night at 11:19 to give the USNTDP a 5-1 lead. Derek May scored the final goal of the game at 14:15. Andrew Fernandez and Brown assisted.
Reid Ellingson saw time between the pipes tonight. He recorded 19 saves. Joe Cannata went the distance for the USNTDP and turned away 21 shots. Shots on goal were almost even as the USNTDP had one more than the ‘Cats at 24-23. With the extra skater the USNTDP was 2-8 while NMU was 0-6.
NMU will be back in action with games that count next week (Feb. 1-2). The ‘Cats will take a trip to Ann Arbor, Mich. to take on cluster-mate the University of Michigan for the second time this season.
