Phillip Violett Leads Wildcats In Marquette

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University men’s Nordic ski team adjusted to the sudden change in venues this weekend. On Thursday the SuperTour event in Minnesota was cancelled due to predicted low temperatures which led to the creation of a race in Marquette hosted by Northern Michigan University and named the CCSA Qualifiers. Saturday (Jan. 19) the men’s competed in the 10K freestyle event then on Sunday (Jan. 20) it was the 15K mass start classic race.
 
Phillip Violett was the first Wildcat to skate across the finish line in the free style race. He was third with a time of 28:22.1. Three places back in sixth was teammate, Justin Singleton (28:32.1). Tim Cook was 14th (30:02.2) with Bill Bowler 20th (30:13.6). Gus Kaeding was 23rd (30:21.8) for the final ‘Cat in the event.
 
Alaska took the team title with 83 points. NMU was second with 76 points.
 
Violett placed second in the classic race on Sunday. His time of 46:09.9 was about a second off of the first-place finisher Marius Korthauer from Alaska (46:08.8). The Wildcats had two top 10 finishers. Singleton was seventh (48:12.8) while Kaeding finished in ninth place (48:42.0). Cook was just out of the top 10 in 12th place (49:17.1).
 
NMU took the team results with 78 points. Michigan Tech was two points back in second place (76).
 
Next week (Jan. 26-27) the ‘Cats will be at the CCSA Conference Championships in Hayward, Wis.
