MARQUETTE–The United States Olympic Education Center has named 23 athletes to the All-Academic Team for their performance during the fall 2007 semester.
The Greco-Roman wrestling team filled half of the positions, grabbing 12 spots. Athletes include Northern Michigan University freshmen Aaron Briggs (Tucson, Ariz.) and Chris Iorio (Holbrook, N.Y.); sophomores John Dibala (Silverton, Ore.) and Mike Rossetti (Pittsburg, Pa.); juniors Chas Betts (St. Michael, Minn.), Cheney Haight (Drem, Utah), Kevin Lozano (Jefferson, La.), Spenser Mango (St. Louis, Mo.) and Ben Sanchez (Leominster, Mass.); seniors Jacob Curby (LaGrange, Ill.) and Jacob Fisher (Platte City, Mo.); and post-baccalaureate student Harry Lester (Akron, Ohio.)
They are joined by NMU junior weightlifter Justin Brimhall (Miami, Fla.). Six women’s freestyle wrestlers also made the team: freshmen Lindsey Brooks (Spring, Texas), Alyssa Lampe (Tomahawk, Wis.) and Amber Miracle (Berlin, Wis.); juniors Nicole Darrow (Lanesboro, Mass.) and Sadie Kaneda (Honolulu, Hawaii); and senior Amy Borgnini (Terre Haute, Ind.)
Women’s freestyle wrestling coach Shannyn Gillespie said he is proud of his team’s accomplishments.
“This shows that our athletes have stepped it up on the mat and in the classroom,” said Gillespie. “There is a correlation between the sport and the classroom when it comes to goal setting and time management that our athletes really understand.”
Speedskaters named to the team include sophomores Sonia Milan (North Royalton, Ohio) and Levi Kirkpatrick (Hills, Iowa). Athletes chosen from the boxing program’s final semester of operation include freshmen Bruno Escalante (Waimanalo, Hawaii) and Keola McKee (Wailuku, Hawaii).
