MIDLAND, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team was looking for the sweep on its road swing Saturday at Northwood. NMU fell just short dropping the 63-62 game in overtime. The Wildcats held a 29-28 lead at the half. NMU drops to 7-8 overall and 2-5 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) with the loss. NU improves to 9-5 and 5-2 respectively.
Kelsey Deacon hit a three-pointer at 14:27 of the first half to give the ‘Cats a 9-6 lead. Allison Carroll would add a jumper about two minutes later for an 11-8 lead. The Timberwolves had a four-point lead at 16-12, but Carroll hit three jumpers in a row to give the ‘Cats an 18-16 lead with 7:57 left in the half. After three ties in the game over the next minute or so, the Timberwolves would take a four-point lead (26-22) with 3:58 left before the half. NMU finished the half with a 7-2 run. Kellie Rietveld’s layup with under a minute left before the intermission gave the ‘Cats a one-point lead.
NMU took its first lead of the second half (43-42) at 11:19 on a layup by Rietveld. NMU then built a seven-point lead on back-to-back three-pointers by Deacon and Cassi Rushford (49-42) with a little over eight minutes left in regulation. The Timberwolves would cut the ‘Cats lead to 49-47 (7:05) before Cassie Hegbloom and Carroll converted layups to make the score 53-47. The Timberwolves scored the final six points in regulation to send the game to overtime.
The overtime period saw Steffani Stoeger convert one of her two free throws to give the ‘Cats the early 54-53 lead. NU would score a basket to take a one-point lead before Carroll made a jumper at 3:19 to give the ‘Cats a 56-55 lead. That would be the ‘Cats final lead of the game. The rest of the way the ‘Cats were out-scored 8-6. Hegbloom made a layup with 27 seconds left in overtime to get the ‘Cats to within one (63-62). NU missed a free throw with 24 ticks left on the clock. NMU was still down by one had one last chance, Stoeger missed a jumper with four seconds showing on the clock. Carroll grabbed the offensive rebound, but could not convert. The buzzer sounded.
Carroll led NMU with 16 while Deacon was next with 15 points. Hegbloom recorded a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Stoeger ended the game with five assists and three steals. Carroll also added nine rebounds. Megan Starnes led the Timberwolves with 17 points.
NMU had a little bit better shooting percentage than the Timberwolves. The ‘Cats were 27-57 from the floor (47.4 percent) while NU shot 40.3 percent (27-67). Deacon had three of NMU’s four three-pointers for the game. NMU had 12 three-point attempts (33.3 percent). The ‘Cats were 4-7 from the free throw line (57.1 percent). Off the glass NMU had an eight-rebound advantage at 41-33.
NMU will begin a four-game home stand this coming week. The ‘Cats face Wayne State (Jan. 19) and Hillsdale (Jan. 20) next weekend.
