MARQUETTE, Mich. – Turnabout is fair play. After beating Notre Dame last night by a score of 2-1 the Fighting Irish turned the table on the Wildcats tonight to take the game by the same score. Notre Dame scored both of its goals in the second period to take the 2-0 lead and then held on for the win. NMU scored a goal in the third frame to cut the lead to one.
Notre Dame improves to 18-6-0 on the season and 11-3-0 in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). While the ‘Cats fall to 9-12-1 and 6-10-0 respectively.
After a scoreless first period, Kevin Deeth gave the Fighting Irish the 1-0 lead at 11:59. Notre Dame made the score 2-0 less than four minutes later on a goal by Christian Hanson at 15:34.
NMU’s lone goal on the night was scored by Jared Brown for his fourth of the season one minute into the third period. Erik Gustafsson and Matt Siddall assisted on the goal.
NMU managed 17 shots on goal for the game. The ‘Cats had three shots in the first period, five in the second and nine in the third. Notre Dame had 32 shots on goal for the game. NMU was 0-3 on the power play while Notre Dame was 0-4.
Brian Stewart went the distance for the ‘Cats as he picked up 30 saves on the night. Brad Phillips for the fighting Irish backstopped 18 shots.
NMU will play two non-conference games next week against Wayne State University. The puck will drop at 7:35 p.m. on Friday and Saturday (Jan. 11-12).
