HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team had no trouble with the Finlandia women’s basketball team Saturday at the MTU Women’s Basketball Classic. NMU held the Lions to 13 first-half points and cruised to a 91-42 win. The 91 points is a season high for the ‘Cats. The Wildcats improve to 4-6 on the season while Finlandia drops to 2-9.
The first half saw the ‘Cats race out to a 23-7 lead a little over six minutes into the game. Kellie Rietveld hit a three-pointer at 13:22 to give the ‘Cats the 16-point lead. Rietveld hit another three-pointer at 4:59 to give NMU the 37-13 lead. The final 7:51 of the half the ‘Cats went on a 17-0 to go into the locker room with a 48-13 lead. FU was held to 4-21 from the floor for the first 20 minutes of the game (19 percent).
The second half saw the ‘Cats begin with a 5-0 as all the points were scored on free throws (53-13). Allison Carroll converted a jumper at 11:36 to give the ‘Cats its largest lead at the time at 64-23. Carroll then made another jumper at 5:33 which gave the ‘Cats a 41-point cushion at 74-33. NMU was 13-34 from the floor in the second half (38.2 percent).
Carroll led all scorers with 21 points. Kelsey Deacon added 16 points. Angie Leckson chipped in with 14 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Rietveld off the bench added 11 points. Erin Powers off the bench had 10 rebounds. Jodi Riutta led the Lions with 13 points.
NMU ended the game by going 31-75 from the floor (41.3 percent). From the three-point line the ‘Cats were 10-27 (37 percent) as Deacon with four and Rietveld with three combined for seven of the three’s. NMU made 27 trips to the free throw line and made 19 throws (70.4 percent). The ‘Cats doubled-up the rebounding total against the Lions at 60-30.
NMU will face Marygrove tomorrow afternoon (Dec. 30) at the MTU event at 1 p.m.
