HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University men’s Nordic ski team raced in its first classical race of the season at Michigan Tech on Sunday. NMU won the team competition for the 15K race with 22 team points, UW-Green Bay was second (12) and MTU third (11).
Phill Violett, was second overall, but the first collegiate skier to cross the finish line with a time of 46:44.2. Placing fifth was Bill Bowler (48:02.8) and sixth was teammate Justin Singleton (48:09.1). Two places back found Gus Kaeding in eighth (48:11.5) and then Tim Cook was 11th (49:30.7). The final ‘Cat to skate across the finish line was Anders Gillis in 22nd (51:48.8).
“Violett had one of his best classic races ever and he is showing improvement in this event,” said Sten Fjeldheim. “The entire men’s team had a strong overall performance and I believe this is one of our fastest men’s team in many years.”
The Wildcats will be back in Houghton for a pre-National event this weekend (Dec. 14-15).
