YPSILANTI, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women’s swimming and diving team capped off the fall semester of competition by finishing in eighth place at the Eastern Michigan Invite with 82 points. The University of Michigan won the event with 1,147.5 points as EMU was second (920.5).
The first event of the second day was the 200-yard medley relay. NMU entered two relays in the event. The ‘A’ relay of Kathleen Sweeney, Brenda Zickus, Courtney Lowry and Sarah Dobratz swam a 2:05.50 which was good for 15th. Nicole Kaszuba, Lindsay VandenBroeck, Sarah Cempel and Lindsey Kuehn were on the ‘B’ relay and they recorded a time of 2:08.65 for 16th.
Mimi Marschall had the highest place for the ‘Cats with a 10th place showing in the 400 I.M. (4:39.42). Other NMU swimmers in the event included Sarah Van Oss (4:54.28) and Lowry (5:02.87). Emily Olson had a time of 1:02.73 in the 100 butterfly (19th).
Four NMU swimmers competed in the 200 freestyle. Dobratz led the way with a 2:02.84 (22nd), Cempel was next at 2:03.06 (23rd), Kate Willems clocked a 2:11.36 (30th) and Zickus touched the wall with a 2:14.17 (31st). The 100 backstroke saw Sweeney finish 20th (1:07.35), Kaszuba 22nd (1:07.71) and VandenBroeck 24th (1:08.20).
The NMU ‘A’ relay in the 800 freestyle relay swam an 8:14.24 which was good for 11th. Members of the relay were Marschall, Cempel, Van Oss and Dobratz. Willems, Kaszuba, Sweeney and Olson were on the ‘B’ relay as they swam an 8:35.43 for 15th.
The next event was the 200 freestyle relay as the NMU ‘A’ relay of Marschall, Willems, Olson and Van Oss finished with a time of 1:45.45 for 14th. In 16th was the NMU ’B’ relay of Cempel, VandenBroeck, Kaszuba and Zickus (1:49.76).
Dobratz swam a 5:20.77 in the 500 freestyle which was good for 20th. Cempel in the 500 had a time of 5:27.20 (22nd) as she was followed by Kaszuba 5:38.15 (25th) and Kuehn 5:44.96 (29th).
Marschall swimming in the other individual medley, the 200 I.M. was 12th (2:14.29). Other NMU swimmers in the event included Van Oss 2:17.72 (23rd), Lowry 2:27.01 (27th) and VandenBroeck 2:29.23 (28th). Olson led the Aqua-‘Cats with a time of 26.12 in the 50 freestyle (21st). Zickus 27.13 (26th) and Willems 27.71 (27th) were the next two NMU swimmers in the event.
Kelli VanderBaan was 15th on the 1-meter board with a score of 151.25 while Kara VanderBaan was next with 149.35 points.
The final event of the two days of swimming was the 400 medley relay. Dobratz, Van Oss, Olson, Marschall were on the ‘A’ relay as they swam a 4:17.39 (14th). The ‘B’ relay consisted of Sweeney, Lowry, VandenBroeck and Willems they finished in 17th with a time of 4:37.39.
NMU’s next competition will be at St. Norbert on Jan. 19.
