ERIE, Pa. – The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team used 31 points from the bench to defeat the Mercyhurst Lakers on Saturday afternoon in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play. NMU won for the first time in GLIAC play for the 2007-08 season with the 76-69 win. With the win the Wildcats improve to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in the GLIAC. The Lakers fall to 1-6 and 0-2 respectively. NMU led for the entire 40 minutes of play.
For the first half of play the ‘Cats shot a hot 60 percent from the floor (15-25) and were 5-12 from beyond the arc (41.7 percent). Allison Carroll hit the first two jumpers of the game and Steffani Stoeger added another one as the ‘Cats were rolling 6-0 about two minutes into the game. The Lakers tried to cut into the lead several time by getting it down to one, but NMU answered the call each time. NMU’s largest lead of the half was 35-25 after a Kellie Rietveld jumper with 4:08 left in the half. The ‘Cats held a seven-point lead at the half (35-28).
The Lakers went on a little run the first three plus minutes of the second half to cut the lead to 39-37. NMU quickly answered with a 7-0 run on a jumper and layup by Stoeger and a three-pointer by Christa Erickson. Carroll hit a jumper with less than 10 minutes left in the game to give the ‘Cats a 12-point cushion (58-46). With about a minute left in the game, the Lakers hit a three to make the score 72-67 and then added a layup for a three-point deficit (72-69). Kelsey Deacon went to the free throw line four times in the final 17 seconds of the game and made all four throws.
NMU cooled off a bit in the second half by shooting 48.5 percent from the floor (16-33), for the game the ‘Cats shot 53.4 percent (31-58). NMU ended the game by going 7-19 from the arc. Erickson and Deacon each had two three-pointers for the game. From the free throw line the ‘Cats were 7-9 for 77.8 percent. Off the glass, NMU had a two-rebound advantage over the Lakers at 31-29.
Rietveld led the ‘Cats off the bench with 10 points. Deacon had a team-high 16 points while Carroll added 13. Stoeger had 12 points. Angie Leckson had seven rebounds. Amy Achesinski led the Lakers with a game-high 29 points.
NMU will open the home portion of the schedule on Tuesday night (Dec. 4) against UM-Duluth at 5:30 p.m. The ‘Cats defeated the Bulldogs, 70-53, in Duluth a week ago.
